凡事有標準,就有「是、非」;
事物又可以分為兩類,「靜 (情況) 和動 (變化) 」 ;
每一件事,都有「開始、過程、結果」;
發展與變化,離不開「起、承、轉、合」;
"The Book of Changes, ChatGPT, Changes in Thought and Organization, the Qian Hexagram, Seeing the Great Person"
When I was a child, I read the Romance of the Three Kingdoms and learned about the Bagua formation, which sparked my interest in the 64 hexagrams of the Book of Changes (I Ching). I felt that the I Ching could be applied in various domains, so whenever I had the chance, I would try to learn more about it.
Chinese medicine? Military tactics? Divination? Binary code? Even martial arts? In the history and culture of China, one can find the traces of this "supreme classic among the classics."
For every matter, there is a standard, and thus there is "right and wrong";
Things can be divided into two categories, "static (situations) and dynamic (changes)";
Every event has a "beginning, process, and result";
Development and change cannot be separated from "initiation, continuance, transformation, and end".
The changes in things can be infinite and endless, but the patterns of human thinking and the ways of perceiving things are limited. The emergence of ChatGPT can actually explain this point quite well. If we set limits on the word count and the topic, such as writing a 1000-word essay on an expressive theme, it may seem that we can generate an infinite number of articles. However, if the articles are coherent and understandable, the number of such articles is ultimately limited. Even for high-quality articles, the creative thinking behind them may only fall into a few categories.
By extension, the commonly used words are only around 3,000-4,000, and the number of coherent articles is limited. Human thought patterns can also be summarized into a few dozen types. By distinguishing which word combinations make sense and which are just nonsense, artificial intelligence can eliminate the nonsense and generate text that meets the asker's needs.
The profundity of the Book of Changes (I Ching) lies in the fact that it can use 8 symbols to form 64 modes of thinking, and each story, each logic, is interrelated. Within each mode of thinking (story), there are also 6 steps that explain the trends and evolution of an event.
To take the first hexagram "Qian (Heaven)" as an example, it explains the process of a person's success:
The first stage is "The dragon is hidden, it is not appropriate to use it. The yang is below."
This means that before taking action, one needs to prepare thoroughly, accumulating abilities and advantages, just like studying extensively in one's youth, or accumulating experience, connections, and advantages upon entering society.
The core of this line is "hidden". "The yang is below" means that one needs to restrain one's ambition and secretly gather strength, making oneself as inconspicuous as possible, not rashly displaying oneself before being fully prepared, waiting for the right opportunity to strike.
Failure often comes from either not having truly mastered the skills, yet rashly taking action, or not knowing that the external environment does not allow it, and needing to "hide the dragon".
The second stage is "The dragon appears in the field, it is beneficial to see the great person, virtue is spread out."
After the first stage of accumulating strength, one reaches the second stage of "the dragon appearing in the field".
When the "hidden dragon" emerges, becoming the "appearing dragon", the emergence needs to be earth-shaking. If all parties know of one's existence, and let the "great persons" know that one's existence will bring benefits, help and assistance to them, for the common interest of all, this is "virtue is spread out".
Without "virtue is spread out", if one's display only steps on everyone else, monopolizing the glory and benefits, one will inevitably be attacked by the masses. Obtaining the assistance of the great persons is the key to further advancement.
The third stage is "The superior person is diligent all day, in the evening he is vigilant and cautious, there is no fault."
In the third stage, one's skills are sufficient, and one also has the assistance of the great persons, but when displaying to all parties, one will encounter various attacks. Once under the spotlight, many of one's flaws will be magnified, so one needs to be extra careful in one's actions. Rumors and slanders will eventually dissipate, but irrefutable evidence can ruin all previous achievements.
When one has a certain degree of fame and fortune, there are many joys and freedoms that are destined to be lost, and one can no longer act recklessly. When pursuing fame and fortune, one must tread carefully, able to withstand the wind and rain.
The fourth stage is "One leaps beyond/ into the abyss, advancing without fault."
When the accumulated energy is sufficient, and one happens to encounter the right opportunity of the times, one gets the key development opportunity. One needs to concentrate resources to take on this challenge. "The carp jumps over the dragon gate." Leap over and become a dragon, one's value multiplied a hundredfold. If one fails, like falling into a deep abyss, a single step off can mean "the difference between heaven and earth".
At this stage, even a slight deviation, or simply lack of luck, can lead to a completely different outcome in one's life.
The fifth stage is "The flying dragon is in the sky, it is beneficial to see the great person."
After successfully leaping over the dragon gate, the situation is very promising, reaching the state of "nine five", the most honored position.
Crossing the dragon gate, one has become a flying dragon. Falling into the abyss would make one a mere worm. As a heavenly creature, one begins to display one's abilities freely, with one's abilities, experience, and status all grown.
But even the flying dragon in the sky still needs to "see the great person". One still needs the assistance of everyone to maintain one's advantages and status.
At this point, one's energy is approaching its peak, and if it declines, one may also fall back to the mortal realm.
To the sixth stage, "The arrogant dragon has regret, fullness cannot last."
"Arrogant" refers to the peak, the end. If one holds absolute power, ultimately monopolizing it, using one's strength to the extreme, one's destiny will also come to an end, with no room for further advancement, and one's energy will inevitably decline, so "fullness cannot last."
This line also explains why the "nine five" state is the best - when things are approaching their peak, there is still room for progress, but when things reach the end, they can only decline.
The six lines of the "Qian (Heaven)" hexagram, with their logical trends, are actually also present in the development process of most successful biographies, both ancient and modern, with endless variations.
The sixty-four hexagrams of the I Ching represent sixty-four distinct modes of thinking. 64 * 64 = 4096 possible variations, while the majority of languages commonly use around 4,000 words. In this information-rich era, can we integrate the languages of various nations and borrow the logical reasoning of the I Ching to design a language system that is highly accessible for human learning?
A language symbol system with a tightly-knit logical structure can significantly reduce the learning cost of this new language. At the same time, by removing the cultural influences on language systems, we can express human thoughts in the most direct manner, allowing AI algorithms to more quickly find the most suitable answers for the asker.
Now that artificial intelligence has emerged, we all have the ability to generate a large volume of content. Assuming there exists an optimal solution under certain conditions for a given topic, perhaps we can establish a platform and a competitive mechanism to create the most suitable encyclopedic learning system for humanity? This could fundamentally solve the problems of unequal access to educational resources and the lack of truly free information flow.
This is also the original intention behind the establishment of an "interactive form information platform".
