達克效應 (Dunning – Kruger effect)

 

(1) 達克效應指能力較差的人往往會高估自己的能力,而能力較強的人則傾向於低估自己的能力。這種現象源自於人們對自身缺乏客觀的自我認知。

 

(2) 在達克效應中,技能較差的人由於缺乏必要的知識和技能,無法正確評估自己的表現。相反,技能較強的人則更容易意識到自己的局限性,因此對自己的能力有更謙遜的評估。

 

例子:

在一個初級程式設計課程中,有一些學生對自己的程式設計能力高度自信。他們認為自己掌握了程式設計的各種技巧,甚至可以輕易地完成教師布置的作業任務。

 

但實際上,這些自信過度的學生往往是最初級的程式設計新手。由於缺乏足夠的知識和實踐經驗,他們無法正確評估自己的實際能力水平。他們不知道自己在程式設計方面存在很多基礎性的問題和缺陷。

 

相反,一些較有經驗的學生,雖然已經掌握了較為專業的程式設計技能,但卻對自己的能力感到謙虛和不確定。他們會懷疑自己是否真的掌握了所有的竅門,擔心自己在某些方面可能還有不足。

The Dunning-Kruger Effect


(1) The Dunning-Kruger effect refers to the tendency of people with lower abilities to overestimate their own abilities, while those with higher abilities tend to underestimate their own abilities. This phenomenon stems from a lack of objective self-awareness.


(2) In the Dunning-Kruger effect, people with lower skills are unable to accurately assess their own performance due to a lack of necessary knowledge and skills. In contrast, individuals with stronger skills are more able to recognize their own limitations, and therefore have a more humble assessment of their abilities.


Example:

In an introductory computer programming course, some students are highly confident in their programming abilities. They believe they have mastered various programming techniques and can easily complete the assignments given by the instructor.


However, these over-confident students are often the most novice programmers. Due to a lack of sufficient knowledge and practical experience, they are unable to correctly evaluate their actual skill level. They are unaware of the many fundamental problems and deficiencies they have in programming.


In contrast, some more experienced students, although they have already acquired more professional programming skills, feel humble and uncertain about their abilities. They may doubt whether they have truly mastered all the tricks, and worry that they may still have shortcomings in certain areas.


(3) The implications of the Dunning-Kruger effect:


① Lower-ability individuals should maintain a humble and open-minded attitude, and strive to improve their own capabilities, rather than feeling self-satisfied.


② Higher-ability individuals should be more confident and not underestimate their own abilities due to excessive humility.


③ Organizations should establish objective performance evaluation mechanisms to correct people's biased perceptions of their own abilities.


In summary, the Dunning-Kruger effect reveals the systematic biases in people's self-assessment of their own abilities, which has important implications for personal growth and team building.
